In this morning’s “Hi & Lois” cartoon, the kid, with his cowboys and Indians toys out, sings, “Oh give me a home of a buffalo gnome and the deer and the cantaloupe play... Where seldom is ‘nerd’ a discouraging word! And the spies are not drowning all day.” Dad says, “I think I prefer his version.” I guess it’s sort of a found-filk.

I filked that song once.

Oh give me a home
By the Capitol Dome
Where the wonks and the lobbyists play,
With brown hazy skies,
And red AQIs,
And I'll sit on the Beltway all day!

The song is so versatile.

And of course there was the cartoon with the capitol Omega on a stove, captioned "Ohm on the range."

I like that kind of thing. I used to be a fan of Walt Kelly's Pogo, which featured a choice of manglings for a Christmas standard: "Deck the halls with Boston Charlie" or "Bark us all bow-wows of folly".

Real misheard lyrics can be a riot also. (There's an extensive web site somewhere that I'm being too lazy to look up right now.) The one that keeps coming to mind is a Grateful Dead piece rendered as, "Wake up to find out that you are disguised as a squirrel." I have a book of collected Robert Hunter lyrics with a preface that says, "I hope that seeing the intended words will provide you with an interesting, if not always convincing, variant on the words some of you actually heard."

I think there are several web sites full of those. I think someone set one up for people to contribute misheard lyrics and vote on whether the original or the mishearing is better.

'scuse me, while I kiss this guy...

OK, I confess that my reaction was "Hi and Lois is still running?"

I let my newspapers lapse a year ago, so I'm out of touch with the world of comix.
