The big winter storm that we had been warned about for days turned out to be maybe 3 or 4 cm of snow on the grass and little to nothing on pavement. With no reason not to stay out, I ate at Noodles And Company and then went to the Pettit Ice Center. The outdoor ice at Red Arrow has been fairly well trashed by the recent rain, so indoors is a much better choice.

I didn't get a time for my first 5km run because I accidentally pressed the stop button on my stopwatch at some point. I did time another 5km run at 14:31, just under 20.7 km/hr. I'm reasonably pleased with that. One does appreciate just how fast the really fast people are after trying this sort of thing. The men's record for 5km is 6:08.78. The 10km record is 12:55.11.

I got my skates sharpened and they feel like different skates. Mostly this is good, but sometimes what was intended to be a graceful sliding maneuver comes out as an uncontrolled swerve. I timed five laps around the 400 meter oval, roughly 2 km, at 6:11, for 19.4 km/hr. For comparison, the men’s record time for 5 km is just slightly longer.

Friday night was the Biochemistry Department’s party at the Pettit National Ice Center. We saw the silly video the graduate students do every year, we had pizza from Eduardo’s, and, the part I liked, skated on the 400 meter oval. My best flying lap was 56.3 seconds, fairly late in the evening when there were fewer slow people to dodge. The real athletes can do a lap in around thirty seconds, which is pretty impressive. Maybe I should take the speed skating class someday, get some speed skates, and come for the speed skating sessions where I’d be one of the slow people, moseying along at 25 km/hr and trying to stay out of the way of the fast people. It is really nice to be able to go 100 meters in a straight line. The little oval at Red Arrow is all turns, which is good practice, I guess, but it is fun to really hammer along in a straight line.
