According to legend, in the early 1860s Friedrich August Kekulé von Stradonitz had some sort of dream of snakes biting their own tails and, so inspired, figured out that benzene has a ring structure. I assume people still tell this tale a hundred and fifty years later because, really, how often does anything worthwhile occur to you in a dream?  For example, this morning the thought that came to me in a dream was "the stunt men are starting the day by setting loudspeakers on fire."  I really don't know what to say, other than that this idea isn't exactly in the same league as the structure of benzene.  At best, it sounds like a concept for cover art for a recording of some kind of music that would go with that sort of cover art.  I don't even know what kind of music that might be.  Presumably something really loud, or possibly inspired by Gödel, Escher, Bach: An Eternal Golden Braid.

Best dream from last night: Televised snow plowing, complete with sportscast--style commentary from a team of announcers. Which, come to think of it, I'd watch if it really was on TV.

Did I just have a dream about having a dream about someone? Yes I did. Interesting...

Lucid Dream

I had my longest lucid dream in a long time this morning. It began with dreaming that I could not read the time on my alarm clock. After fiddling with it a while, I realized that this was dream sign. I flew around the room a bit, then tried to fly out through the wall. I got stuck, as I often do, and went back into the room for a while, then succeeded in exiting. The inside was, more or less, the room I actually sleep in. The outside was a different city.

It started out night, and I remembered to take a good look at the stars. I’ve very good at dreaming bright, numerous stars. Really, bright points or dots come up a lot in my dreams, whether as dust grains in the air or stars in the sky. At some point it became day, but I didn’t really notice that sudden change. It’s really interesting to wander around in a dream looking at all the detail your brain can imagine. Stars, tree bark, people. The sense of touch works as well, of course. Tree bark, cloth, a woman’s breast...

Anyway, lots of fun. I was in a pretty dreamy state after I woke up from it, slipping into and out of dreaming many times before I had to get up and go to work.
