When the deuterium UV lamp in the HP1090 high-{pressure,performance,price} liquid chromatograph died at the beginning of the week, I carefully looked though the documentation for replacement instructions and ordered the specified part number. Our “rush” order finally arrived today. It does not fit. After removing the old lamp, I see that the part number, which can only be seen with it removed, is not the same as the part number in the manual. Thank you, Hewlett-Packard (which calls themselves Agilent now, but they were still HP when the 1090 was made). Besides being wrong, the manuals are hopelessly disorganized, too.

Fortunately, the ever-helpful Carroll in the biochemistry office contacted VWR, and they will send out what I hope is the right part on Monday and we’ll send the wrong part back.

This is the same Carroll who almost set the microwave oven on fire today, determining that five minutes is too long for popcorn by filling the hall with smoke. But she works wonders on the phone.
