Windycon!

Windycon was tons of fun.

Tricky Pixie and the various permutations of Sooj, Betsy, Alec, and everyone else was wonderful. Heather Dale and Ben Deschamps are crazy-cheerful. Tomboat was great. Mary Crowell. Fiddling Amy. Just sort of all the awesome you can stand.

Set of photos!

Random Observations:

  • Percussionists hit objects to make sound. The majority of objects in the universe will make sound if you hit them, not just Official Percussion Instruments recognized by the Percussion Institute and sold in music stores. Also objects purchased at Home Depot.
  • Everyone loves fiddle! Thanks [livejournal.com profile] sweetmusic_27!
  • Should have brought my heart rate monitor. The climb up to the 14th floor (where my room was) was fun. The hotel is a bit confusing, but stairs actually do have a few signs. Not enough, but better than average, though that isn't saying much. Stairs were slightly less ugly than average, too.
  • It is much awesome to be right up near Amy and Betsy when they play.
  • I grew up near the current hotel's location, and used to go to that shopping mall, though it doesn't really look anything like I remember anymore.

*tips hat* You're welcome! Thanks for the photos! These are fantastic! (Also, I tried really hard not to be Distracting Fiddler when you were playing, um, the bird song, but I kinda failed. Sorry about that. I'll be more subtle next time, unless you don't want me to play next time. I just really like the bird one and the Hazel Tree one.)

I'm glad other people can experience/sense that. Sometimes I wonder if we're just in our own little musical world and being terribly rude. I mean, I probably don't care, but sometimes I wonder. XD

I was really happy to have you playing. ("Courted by a Blackbird") I think I looked more panicked than I really was. You weren't distracting at all beyond the "don't loose the fiddler-try to keep the tempo even" thing. Mostly it was a big somewhat acoustically absorbing sort of room of the sort in which I sometimes have a hard time hearing myself, or at least hearing myself well enough to really feel comfortable that I'm hearing myself and not totally hosing the singing. I don't think you made it any harder at all, and, you know, added fiddle = awesome.

I was right in front of Betsy Sunday evening and as good as modern audio recording technology is, it's not the same as sitting in front of a cello. Plus it's fun to watch. And, you know, *both* of you. Stereo!

Oh, no, your tempo was fine! I'm so glad you didn't mind.

Yeah, there's nothing like sitting in front of a cello. Or beside one, or really in a five-foot radius. They're so cello-y! Stereo for the win. 8)

I've gotten good percussion sounds out of lots of things, such as:

They are also really good 'wind' instruments, provided either (a) you have a good 'brass' or didgeridoo technique or (b) people don't mind you making rather rude noises *g*. Oh, and providing everyone else happens to be in the same key (that length is probably somewhere around F, but will vary according to local air pressure). (I used to be able to play "Come to the cookhouse door" on the tube from a vacuum cleaner when I was a teenager, all three notes of it.)

Yes, amazing music. My new fantasy band is Amy, Mary and Betsy.

Oh, yes. There's got to be some way to get the three together.

We did play together at Consonance this spring. Only on a song or two, namely "Wicked Girls" - but we're also together on the CD.

But I sure wouldn't mind us playing more!
