But Folsom Prison Nightmare was stuck in my head...

I shot a man in Reno, just to watch him die
Prison is a nightmare and I will tell you why
This song that tells my story can get stuck in your head
And the tune keeps a-playing with other words instead

Folsom Prison Greens (like beet greens)

On my commercial bar gigs (where this song is often played) I sometimes wish I were the regular lead singer, so I could sing, "But I burned a man in Memphis, just to watch him fry." Not that funny, but at least it's unexpected.

Just FYI (since I haven't seen you in a long time) Adam Stemple pointed out that Pinball Wizard scans to Folsom Prison blues. I took it from there. I now have something like 80 songs that I have puled verses from. It damages audiences.

The list of songs includes "O Little Town of Bethlehem," "Auld Lang Syne," "The Yellow Rose of Texas," "It Came Upon a Midnight Clear" (I particularly like singing "O Little Town of Bethlehem" to "Midnight"), most of the poetry of Emily Dickinson -- there are a whole bunch. You can look in most Christian hymnals and anything that is marked 8, 7, 8, 7, will fly with all of these.

Reminds me of the time a friend started singing "Puff the Magic Mushroom"

Heh. Intentionally or by accident? I quite often find that if I'm not thinking (especially if I don't know the original very well) the words come out ... strange. Like my "christmas carol" version of "Streets of Laredo":

As I was out walking the streets of Laredo,
As I took a walk in the city one day,
I came across something I wasn't expecting:
The little Lord Jesus asleep in the hay!
