Wonderful weekend at the Musecon 0 beta-test con.

Number 0 was a deliberately low-attendance scaled down event to make sure everything is organized workably and to get some experience to make a better number 1 next year. Not only was it a successful test run but it was a really nice event in its own right. I only know what I saw but everything seemed to go super-smooth. Happy people everywhere doing stuff. Consuite not only stocked with good munchies (and the slushy machine!) but actual food actually available at posted, scheduled times. That's awesome. I hate getting into the car and driving around by the highway offramp (abandon hope all yea who want to turn left) in some random unfamiliar suburb looking for food.

My girlfriend did some chain maille, some paper art stuff, polymer clay, something involving lots of string, blinkies, and I don't know what else. Darn near everything. Mostly I stayed with the music, though Sunday morning I spent some time with the people taking apart hard disks.

In the Musecon spirit of people trying new things, they stuck me up on the stage for a half hour. It went well! Since everyone seems to post setlists, mine was:

Courted By A Blackbird - Lord Landless
Der Phoenix - Julia Ecklar/C.J. Uberall
Star Pilot's Hymn - Anne Harlan Prather
Nuts From The Hazel Tree - Echo's Children
Read It Slow/A.J.'s Song - words mine, tune stolen from Echo's Children
To Friends - [livejournal.com profile] peteralway
Partita in A minor, Allemande - J.S. Bach

Obviously, no one is ever satisfied with their performance, but the guitar-vocal stuff went about as well as I'd expected, not perfect but no disasters, and the flute pieces actually better than I'd expected. [livejournal.com profile] peteralway was in the audience so he heard his piece played. He wrote that for an iron composer challenge in response to my request. It was written for flute and there are a few other flutists in filkdom but I'm not aware of anyone else playing it. It could use some more work in phrasing and pacing but it was probably the best run through it I've ever done anywhere.

The allemande? It was written by the great master. It says A-minor at the top, but the first accidental is in the first measure and it uses all 12 of the 12 notes in the first page. It's a non-trivial challenge and I could use a good deal more work on it but nonetheless it generally does impress.

I got a lot of very nice comments afterward :)

Lots of other great music. Nice to hear [livejournal.com profile] jerusha again, and [livejournal.com profile] born_to_me. Toyboat was special, as always. Harmonica workshop was good, blues workshop was good. Lots of people showed up.

The hotel is nice. The glass elevators are fun, but unfortunately nearly the only place you can stand and not see the elevators going up in down is...in front of them waiting for one, the one place you'd really want to be able to see them. I'm not sure how that could be fixed, but it's annoying. (As always, the stairs are exceeding ugly, as though they expected no one would see them unless the building catches on fire. It's only a 12 story building! Or maybe I just have the warped perspective of someone who runs 21.1 kilometers at a time for fun.)

Other fun for me:

Little Miss M. was eager to play with me and be held upside down. And be held upside down. And held upside down some more. And again. Again! :)

It seemed everywhere I went one cute woman or another would indicate that I was supposed to be touching her, or she wanted a smooch. I'm OK with that. Yes indeed. Not a problem. And while it is conventional for people to laugh when they see [livejournal.com profile] mystique_muse lift me into the air (I'm tall!), it's less common for someone to decide she should try lifting me into the air, too. I'm OK with that, too.

Just an overall awesome event. You should all come next year. It's possible I'll get sucked into doing something ham-radio-related, if you're interested in that. We'll see.

The Allemande -- one of those pieces where one wonders why the composer bothered with a key signature. Or in this case actually didn't, perhaps it's written a-minor so he didn't have to bother with one (and probably threw in a few actual a-minor chords just to keep the purists happy). One of the pieces I am not going to analyse as part of learning music theory! Triads in minor keys are bad enough (I can play the things, but working out the names is a pig; it doesn't help that I can't count in Roman numerals either.)

I don't suppose anyone did a recording of your set?

The convention sounds good (I thought so when it was announced earlier), it's a pity it's in the wrong country. If they'd just move it north of the border *g*...

Are we likely to be seeing you back over this side of the Pond?

No recording. Peter has one photo. (http://www.flickr.com/photos/48113599@N04/4877239038)

I certainly hope to be over on the other side of the Atlantic again. Just a matter of money. Possibly next year, we'll see.
