Wandering in Milwaukee
Oct. 2nd, 2004 07:00 pmI saw some interesting things in Milwaukee today. One thing I noticed is that there are a lot of buildings in the third ward area that have rooftop decks. One of the things I noticed when I visited San Francisco a few years ago was the prevalence of rooftop decks and gardens and it is very interesting to see that here, too. Some of those must offer very nice views. I’m sure those places are outside of my price range, but it is exciting to see people imagining the value of making an open space with a fantastic view available to residents rather than solely to air-conditioning technicians.
I stopped by the Riverview Antique Market and looked around. I’m not really too much into antique furniture but they did have some interesting items. One item I would really love to have, but, alas, cannot justify $250 for: a huge 3000 watt incandescent lamp salvaged from a ship and mounted on a lucite stand. The huge coiled filament zig-zags up and down in the center, a concave reflector behind it. It is in beautiful condition and I’d just love to have it, but money is finite and I’d love an iPod more.
I haven’t walked around that area before, to the south-east of the Menomonee River, south of East Pittsburgh Avenue, across the river from the Summerfest Grounds and the Jones Island waste water treatment plant. There are some fascinating decaying buildings in the area. There is an Elementis facility producing chromium compounds for leather tanning. There’s a boat launch ramp. An electrical substation, with several large transformers lined up in concrete revetments. Some yacht and marine supply companies. Across the river giant cranes can be seen.
I’ll have some used book store comments later.
