Maybe this comparison is unfair or something, but, still, see below two photos taken out of windows at two conventions, WindyCon in a suburb of Chicago and FilkCONtinental in Germany:
I'm still gradually putting up FC photos on Flickr, and for the most part haven't even gotten to the photos I took traveling around before the con. It was such a wonderful trip and I do really miss the place.
I can't help but think there are conference locations in the US with such lovely views, but that nobody would be willing to pay for them for a hobby convention.
See, the thing about that youth hostel is, it is very, very, very cheap. Not luxury living by any stretch of the imagination, but very cheap and in a very beautiful location. It's just plain different.
Yeah, but Peter's right. To get a setting like that at any North American con of size you'd have to be willing to pay a huge registration/hotel tab. Most cons have to be out in the industrial outskirts of large cities just to make them affordable. I'm glad they're there. FilkContinental is extraordinary in that it's in such a gorgeous and affordable setting. It's truly unique.
Good thing music at any filk circle can take us to those gorgeous settings in our minds :).
But seeing the mist coming up over the hills from the window on FilkContental mornings is one of the most magical things I've ever seen :). Photos can't do it justice.
In all fairness, there are prettier sights even in the suburbs, and the city itself can be really quite interesting in places. And for that matter, as painfully lovely as Hattingen is, that parking garage we parked in was probably the ugliest I've ever been in, and it's not like they are usually pretty over here. (Except the one in the art museum in Milwaukee, which is probably the most expensive place in Milwaukee to park a car. The museum itself is all bright shiny well-lit white surfaces, and even the parking garage is shiny and white and well-lit. It was amazing.) And see the madfilkentist's photo from Köln linked to below.
Now, to really make some sort of statement about America, see this photo (http://flickr.com/photos/beigephotos/57300324/in/set-1266586/) taken inside the hotel the Ohio Valley Filk Festival (OVFF) is held in. ;)
*lol* oooookay. "No weapons except that horrible voice you bring in anyway and the guitar as long as you don't hit anybody with it".
I've been to the US and I know you have very pretty landscapes over there. And quite a lot of space that is not built on. The pity is that it is always so far away from home :-)
It's true, there are lots of pretty places here. Occasionally, possibly by accident, we even *build* stuff here that is pretty and sometimes even functional.
I do live by Lake Michigan and lots of pretty beaches (http://flickr.com/photos/beigephotos/24180450/in/photostream/) and rolling hills covered with farms are just a nice bike ride away. Sometimes both at once (http://flickr.com/photos/beigephotos/246056266/).
