Melting

The weather turned warm today, substantially above freezing. The snow is already melting away, and while Lapham Peak's ski trails remain covered for now, they are already icy and hard to ski on. The current forecast is for warmth all week and possible rain on Saturday. We will thus return from winter wonderland back to late sunrise, early sunset, cold, rain, dormant plants, and no snow to play on. The cold and dark part of winter is inevitable, but the fun part, the snow, is very fragile. A warm sunny day in summer can be a great day to cycle to the beach regardless of the weather the day before, unless the weather the day before was a storm so severe the effects are still being felt, but skiing is very much a matter of the weather over the last days and even weeks.

We're just starting to get a bit of daylight just before I have to wake up, but we'll go back to darkness in the morning soon when we change the clocks to daylight saving time.

I tend to find the changing of the seasons a bit depressing, for we lose what we had in the old season long before we really get into the new season.

Though when we do melt all the ice away, I'll start riding the bicycle to work again.

Riding the bike to work - that's brave! I always resolve to go to work by bike instead of using the bus, but mostly I'm too lazy to do. It's no long way, I would be there in 15 - 20 minutes.

Changing of the seasons - well, there hasn't been much snow here this winter. I can remember three days when there has been enough snow for the children to build a snowman. And even the snowmen didn't last longer than two or three days. There was some rain, but not too much. (We are used to have rain around here...)The last days were quite warm, as if spring decides to start a little more early this year. There are crocuses and snowdrops everywhere - I like to see them again! :) So the change from season to season wasn't so hard this time - even if I think there's something in the wind and perhaps there will be snow again.... or lots of rain and this dull, uncomfortable weather I don't like at all...

But in the meantime I enjoy the first flowers and the sun upon my face. ;) And if the dull weather will come - well, there are a lot of cake recipes I would like to test. :)

The trip to work is just over 14 km for me, and takes around 40 minutes by bicycle. The car is maybe 10 minutes faster, but the time is much more variable with traffic. The bus involves a trip far out of my way and a transfer and thus takes about an hour longer, and so I very rarely take the bus to work. I will sometimes go downtown after work by bus, having gotten to work by car or bicycle.
