Two photos, my bike with new panniers and my folding solar PV panel:

I'm charging 4 AA NiMH cells and my cell phone here. I spent some time after work reading a magazine and enjoying the sunny day while making use of the sun. The solar panel is flexible and folds up to a quite compact size. It's a Sunlinq made by Global Solar using copper indium gallium diselenide solar cells. This version can produce a maximum of 12 watts at 12-ish volts under full sun.

The Tour Easy has my new Arkel RT-40 panniers on it. These are a bit bigger than my old ones but are not overwhelmingly big. They seem very well made.

It really works! Red LEDs indicate charging. There is something amazing about it. Unfold flat thing, set it in sun, electricity comes out.

Fascinating! I could need something like that for the medieval faires!

Are solar power, mobile phones and recumbent bikes period?

I believe mobile phones with nearly-dead batteries are de rigueur, but you could probably make a case for charged-up batteries. The bicycle can hardly be less period than a car. You would want to change shoes, though. Wandering around in Viking garb plus brightly-colored cycling shoes with ratcheting buckles and velcro wouldn't be right.

*lol* Not really, but I like to have my moblie with me when travelling through the time. And it's nice to have the opportunity to recharge the thing!
