What I learned today

Today, I learned that if someone uses an electric pencil sharpener regularly but never, ever empties out the drawer full of shavings (apparently believing that that is something done by the pencil sharpener fairies while she is away on vacation), the sharpener will fill with shavings until they are very tightly packed. So tightly packed that getting the little drawer open to empty them out is hard. But it will still sharpen.

Here's a really neat trick: If your automatic pencil sharpener is old enough, sometimes the shavings will ignite! :)

Or, it would be, if the pencil sharpener were located in one of those concrete buildings firefighters use for training. Unfortunately, it's located in a chemistry laboratory, and we really, really, really don't want fires there.

It's been a long time since I had much to do with a pencil sharpener, but I do recall that the same thing is true of the good old-fashioned hand-cranked ones.
