Last week’s Formula 1 race was at the new track outside of Istanbul, Turkey. Naturally, Speed Channel couldn’t resist playing bits of the They Might Be Giants rendition of Istanbul (Not Constantinople), a song from 1953 that’s older than either of the Giants or, for that matter, all of the F1 drivers. I was inspired to get out my old They Might Be Giants CDs that I haven’t listened to in ages and do a little listening. It’s sort of a college flashback thing for me. The Giants mostly remind me of my girlfriend from the time, Z, which is generally a pleasant thing.

There is a gas station on 108th street where I on occasion buy gasoline that plays 80s music, much of which I don’t recognize but that that I do tends to be high school for me. Not stuff that I liked, of course, no one plays that (I’m always surprised when music I like turns out to actually be really well known), but stuff that was playing at the time.
