I wore my new Mr. Housing Bubble (“Not affiliated with Mr. Internet Bubble”) t-shirt while at Mayfair mall today and three or four youthful black men stopped me and insisted on getting a cameraphone photo of the cool shirt. Now, I’m a white nerd type, so far from cool that light leaving from cool takes years to reach me, so I don’t really know for sure if they actually thought it is a cool shirt, or if this was more of an ironic thing, and they thought I was the biggest dweb ever, but they seemed cheerful. For all I know, there is some pre-existing Mr. Bubble that has nothing to do with joking about people losing money in the stock market or real estate, and they were getting some joke that I’m not even aware of. Anyway, with my fashion sense, I don’t wear a lot of clothes that attract attention, so it was an interesting experience. (The music+science=sexy shirt is popular at filks, though.)

There used to be a kid-oriented bubble bath soap called "Mr. Bubble."

Ah, now it all makes sense! Knowing what to look for, it's easy to find the soap artwork on the Internet and the shirt is obviously modeled after the soap. That explains the otherwise odd choice of pink for the shirt. The men in the mall didn't look like the right age group (as far as my limited ability to guess age goes) to be worried about the housing bubble, or to be big readers of political blogs (where I saw ads for the shirt), but presumably they made the soap connection (which I was unaware of). A good t-shirt works on many levels....
