The Sports Section
May. 31st, 2005 03:21 pmLooking at the Monday Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel sports section, I see that the final results of the three-week Giro d’Italia, one of the biggest bicycle races in the world, were listed, but not as a story, just the final times printed in tiny print in a big table of minor sports results, such as high school baseball and trap shooting. I think this was the first mention of the race. The Formula 1 Grand Prix did get an actual (short) story, one that leaves the reader who saw the race wondering if the writer saw the race, or just looked up the winner and slapped something together. This is the same newspaper that will, when football excitement peaks, put together an entire special section devoted to a football game that has not actually been played yet. This is why I usually just throw the sports section away without looking at it. If I’m interested in it, it’s not in there, if it’s in there, I don’t care.
