Warning!

I have The Weather Underground send me e-mail and text-message alerts when severe weather watches and warnings are in effect in southeastern Wisconsin. This is great and everything, but the weather service issues endless slightly-updated bulletins, and I get each and every one of them, so when storms are in the region, like yesterday afternoon, I get something beeping every ten minutes. I felt like running down the halls shouting, chicken-little-like, “We are all going to be killed by the possible severe thunderstorms! Which may form due to conditions favorable for the formation of severe weather!”

The people whose business it is to warn us about severe weather are way too paranoid; they cry wolf far too much. If I actually reacted the way their recommendations say, I'd be spending a tenth of my life hiding from imagined tornadoes. I don't even want to hear about it unless there's actually a tornado, and not just one somewhere within 50 miles, not just one somewhere in my (large) county, but actually one coming close to my town.
