To give you an idea of what an attentive, alert, and in-tune with my environment sort of guy I am, yesterday I realized that the ion-trap mass spectrometer’s ion transfer capillary was becoming clogged by the change in the sound of the rough vacuum pumps. A check of the vacuum gauges confirmed lower than usual pressure.

So I may be largely oblivious to human emotion, but a change in the gas load on the vacuum pumps? That I can hear.
