I’ve received word from mom that my father, long suffering from Alzheimer’s and now in the late stages of the disease, is ill and not likely to survive much longer. He’s been unable to recognize anyone or say anything intelligible for quite some time, so in that sense he’s already been gone for years. He’s generally been otherwise fairly healthy, but recently he’s had trouble swallowing, leading to lung problems.

I'm sorry. It sucks that he's so sick now, and it sucks that he's been essentially gone for years. Alzheimer's is on my "wouldn't wish on my worst enemy" list, and this is why.
