I have not been making much music lately, and have not been to many of the local house filks, either.  That's partly because I'm often busy with something else, partly because now that I don't have my traveling companion around I don't feel like going anywhere on a Saturday night.  I did go to [livejournal.com profile] filkart's gathering last night, though, and I had a great time.  It was nice to be back among the music friends again.

Also, what was basically the first thing that happened?  I was asked to sing something I hadn't practiced in probably two years.  In German.  Sure, why not!  Actually, I practiced the German language songs a whole heck of a lot when I was first learning them, so, fortunately, it was pretty well lodged in the brain.  [livejournal.com profile] aryana_filker, you get your songs requested in Wisconsin.

You may know (but I do not): is filk popular in other languages? I know there are some languages and cultures where puns are prevalent and others where they're rare, but I don't know about song re-engineering.

There is a pretty good group of Germans (I've been to Germany for a filk con, twice) who do a lot of English-language but also a lot in German (and often translations, in both directions). They're pretty connected to the British filkers and to North America, so I know about them. I've seen a few things in Spanish language from South America, but if there is a community it's not really well-linked to us up here so I don't know. I do know there is an Israeli filk contingent, too. This one time at a filk con...they all got hit with the same song in German (from me) and Hebrew (from two friends I saw conferring while I was singing, leading me to believe they were up to something, not sure what, but probably in something in Hebrew...) That was fun.

There are filk songs in Hebrew. The community [livejournal.com profile] israfilk has some, though it hasn't been active in years. At least I assume they're filk songs; I can't read a letter of Hebrew.

I suppose that shouldn't be surprising: Hebrew and Yiddish both have long histories of wordgames.
