Things done
Sep. 9th, 2010 12:50 pmSaturday I went up to Pike Lake by bicycle. It was a lot cooler than it's been most of the summer, and there was a pretty strong wind. After fighting the headwind all the way there, I finally realized just how strong the wind was when I finally stopped on the east side of the little lake and felt the full unobstructed wind while standing still. I found it hard to get my light jacket on because it was flapping in the wind so hard I couldn't get my arm into the sleeve. I guess that explains why I was so tired. Pretty well only the windsurfers were at Pike Lake

Pike Lake doesn't normally really have waves, that's pretty churned up for such a small lake.
The trip home with the wind from behind was a lot faster and easier.
Sunday was warmer and a lot calmer, and Joyce and I make a 12km trip out through the harbor in the kayaks:

This was the first time this year we were in the wetsuits. The warm days of summer are pretty well over even if it's still a long time until real winter will arrive. The trips in to work this week have be in long tights and arm warmers, and while it's been warmer in the afternoon it's still been cool.
Ended up staying up later than I'd have liked Sunday night, waiting for the police to finish talking to everyone. Someone came into the Alterra coffee shop claiming to have a gun, took three laptops and a phone from various people before running (literally, no car for the getaway) away. He shouted something to the effect of get down, get on the floor. Someone interviewed for the tv news said he'd watched enough movies to know that meant a holdup. Me, I don't watch so many movies, I had no idea what the problem was, my thought was, tornado? It was raining earlier, but I wasn't expecting weather we'd have to take cover from. Seemed very strange to me. The whole thing only took a minute or two, I figured it out about half way through. Seriously dumbass crime, roomful of witnesses, huge fuss, cops everywhere afterward. And he didn't think to take any money from the store, either.
And on Monday I bought a new toy, a Canon A3100IS to replace my very old and now not-working-quite-right A95. I have a 400D SLR and a bunch of very nice (...expensive...) lenses, the main requirements I had for this camera were small size and low price. I'm actually quite pleased with it. It's quite small, reasonably nice to use with zippy enough response to not be totally frustrating to someone used to the SLR, and it seems to work pretty well. And did I mention cheap? I think most of what it won't do I'd rather use the SLR for anyway. No manual modes, and not really the best for fast action, but excellent for the basic simple stuff and a whole other world from the cell-phone technically-it-qualifies-as-a-camera sort of thing.
Ever heard someone say he was out pounding the pavement? The guys running this machine really were out pounding the pavement:
