Fun

Yesterday I left work early to go downtown for the big fireworks display, which is on the 3rd for whatever reason. I had a nice fish and chips dinner at John Hawk's Pub and set up my little chair in a good spot in Veteran's Park. I was behind one of the walkways, so I divided my waiting time between reading and watching humanity pass by. Since it was a warm day, it was something of a parade of cleavage.... The fireworks show was excellent, as usual.

I drove into the city and parked reasonably close by, paying about $2. I noticed an interesting price gradient. 2nd street was $2, you could pay $10 just four blocks closer, and $20 two or three more blocks east. Honestly, I'd not have imagined that three blocks could be worth $10.

I wandered around a bit after the fireworks, waiting for the traffic to clear a bit. I did my best to give directions to a rather drunk man who'd lost his car and companions. Since he described it as having been parked in two unrelated and distant-from-each-other locations, it is no wonder he had not been getting much useful help from people. He was, at least, a polite drunk.

Something I realized is that I occasionally encounter people who I assume are under the influence of ethanol, but, really, I've not had the chance to watch people drink and become drunk. I'm just assuming that what I'm seeing is what drunk looks like.

Fascinating how people feel the need to sound their horns. Especially with several police at each intersection directing traffic. I'd be inclined to keep quiet and let the cops do their thing....

I got home around 1 AM, and didn't get a very early start on today, but nonetheless rode my bicycle up to Harrington Beach, about 15 km north of Port Washington and 60km from my home in Milwaukee. It is a nice ride through the country, mostly pretty close to the lake, which you can see between the trees here and there. I think you can see a different color in the sky above the lake, too.

Lake Michigan is always beautiful in the distance, but sometimes not so pretty up close. This was one of those days with a high concentration of floating dead stuff. Rotting vegetation and lots of tiny dead fish today, plus very, very cold water. It's still nice to wander the beach, though, with Tom Smith's beach song stuck in my head.

I didn't have much time to spend in Port Washington, though I did get a strawberry smoothie and spent a little time looking at the boats. No time to stop at Lion's Den Gorge, a mighty pretty spot on Lake Michigan just south of Port Washington. But I'll be back again someday.
