About a week ago, I understand, at a football game, one of the players pretended to moon the spectators. He didn’t actually pull his pants down, he just gestured in such a way as to indicate that thought. People are still talking about this, and now I read (it’s the top item in the little column of “today’s top news” on the left edge of the front page of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel) that the NFL is fining him $10,000. What the fuck is wrong with us? Sure, it’s hardly the finest commentary ever delivered, and if a Nobel laureate delivered the gesture during his acceptance speech, or the President did one during the state of the union address, that would be pretty surprising, and people would be talking about it for some time, but this “incident” occurred at a football game. I’m not a football fan, but it seems like the major activity at a football game is large men attempting (generally successfully) to knock each other down. You’d imagine that the standards would be a bit lower. I’m just stunned that anyone could possibly give a shit.
