My new favorite red wine
Dec. 1st, 2004 10:00 pmI’ve recently tried and taken a liking to Coronas wine from Torres, a Spanish winery in Catalonia. According to the label, it is made from Tempranillo (86%) and Cabernet Sauvignon (14%) grapes. The professional wine snobs, working hard in the pretentious phrase room (the most important room in a winery, according to Dave Barry), describe it as having a “subtle cherry colour with brick red overtones. Elegant aroma, showing a delicate balance between varietal notes of forest fruits and liquorice, and spicy hints of oak. Well rounded palate with smooth varietal tannins. Will age well in bottle over the next few years, although it has already developed a silky palate after barrel-ageing.” I’ve been buying the 2001 vintage, $11.19 a bottle at my local Outpost natural foods co-op. That’s right in what seems to be the usual price range for something that’s neither really cheap nor exotic and expensive.
Not being a professional pretentious phrase expert, I’d say it’s a bit sweeter and fruitier than most, with a gentler, less acidic flavor. To my inexpert tongue it is noticeably different from most reds and for my tastes nicer.
After all, wine is good for you. In proper dosage. If you are named in newspaper articles about car-surfing injuries that state that “alcohol is thought to be involved,” you are drinking too damn much. Like my mother, I’m more in the “person goes to bed early---alcohol thought to be involved” category.
(I always wanted to use the “drunk” Livejournal mood.)
