Willingness to keep trying in spite of making lots of mistakes is the key, and you're doing very well at that.

I've found watching German-language movies with German subtitles to be very useful.

Agreed that understanding songs is especially difficult. The words don't flow as in normal speech. But learning songs has been very useful for fixing bits of the language in my memory.

Announcements in railroad stations are impossible to understand regardless of language. While waiting for a train that was significantly delayed, I heard an announcement that seemed related to that train but couldn't make it out. I asked a person nearby what the announcement had just said, explaining "Ich verstehe nicht Bahnhof."

Right now I'm plowing through Die Stadt der Traeumenden Buecher as fast as I can manage, without stopping to look up words in a dictionary. It's very tough going, but the book is so good that I don't want to slow down even more looking up words.
