One thing I've noticed is that any time I use even a few words of German in a Livejournal post, I get a bunch of comments, particularly from my German friends. What does this mean? I'm not certain, but if real life is like livejournal—and clearly LJ is just like real life, right?—then when I visit Germany, if I speak any German, I'll end up surrounded by charming and lovely German women. Who will tell me that I used the wrong article and the words are all in the wrong order and my accent is very strange cute.

We'll see in the fall :)

Cute. We will tell you it's cute. :-)

And besides that happens in every country (except France maybe) where you try to stumble along in a foreign language, clearly making an effort. People love that. They correct you. I makes them feel superior. And then they switch to English because they can't stand their own language being mutilated any longer *ggg*

In France, they appreciate the effort too... as long as you're not in Paris. (Circa the 1980s and early 1990s, though, they didn't then switch to English for the simple reason that they didn't know English.) I've never figured out what the Parisians' problem is. It's like they combine the negative stereotypes of the French with the negative stereotypes of New Yorkers.

But Germans, especially, delight in "helping" you with your "cute" mistakes. Sehr schoen!

Good. You all do speak English in such a charming manner. :)

(I'm getting better, I think. I used to listen to recordings and think "I can't make that sound, no matter how I try" but now I think, "on a good day, I kinda sound like that. Sort of.")

Haha - yes most Germans have problems with the "th" sound because in kindergarten they try to teach us not to lisp, and then in school they ask us to do it again. You should hear me talk English. I can give quite an expression of a Georgian or and Indian speaking English, I was told :-) I take fun out of imitating voices and slangs. It helped me a lot when learning languages.

I am sure I am still discernible as German though. You never get quite rid of it. And I am still short of mastering the clucking !Kung sound though *ggg*

'S all right. I correct my daughter's German, she corrects my Chinese.

*lol* As Jaelle said.
It's cute. BTW. Crazy Germany have wine in da house. So be careful! :)

Ja. Ihr Wein und Branntwein habt. Ich erinnere. Teilweise...

I was just joking that whatever it was I said and did it obviously wasn't bad, since I've been welcomed back rather than told to stay on my own damn continent. :)

Maybe it has something to do with your wonderful enthusiasm about German. It is lovely.
