I drove home, got out of my car, and heard beep-beep-beep, beep-beep-beep, beep-beep-beep... Wandering the parking lot, I determined it came from the dumpster. It seems there is a smoke detector in there, complaining about something in the only language it speaks. Someone decided to just toss it in there, with its battery still in place, beeping. I have neighbors who must be experienced to be believed.
One of the smoke detectors in the hallway needs a new battery. I'm going to have to change it. I'm the only one here who does smoke detector batteries. One time, a faint, once-per-minute beep was coming from one of the apartments, I think the one below mine. I taped a 9V battery to the wall with a note begging the person with the nearly-dead battery to replace it for everyone's sake. Which they did, within hours. They lived for about a week with a smoke detector, mounted in the hall right outside the bedrooms, beeping loudly once per minute, until I provided a battery for them. Amazing. Unbelievable. I don't really believe this story, and I was personally involved in it.
