Starting at the beginning
Jun. 27th, 2005 02:52 pmVia a series links in the Wikipedia, I ended up at the US EPA’s Natural Processes In The Great Lakes. I always like it when someone starts at the beginning. This page begins, “The foundation for the present Great Lakes basin was set about 3 billion years ago, during the Precambrian Era.” Hmm. The next logical step would be to start with ‘The foundation for the present Great Lakes basin was set about 15 billion years ago, during the Big Bang, when the matter and energy that would eventually form protons emerged....’
The other thing I liked in this article was the description of the predicted effects from global warming. Lake levels might drop by between one half and two meters. Agriculture may be greatly effected. On the other hand, “...Toronto’s climate would resemble the present climate of southern Ohio.” So cheer up, my friends in Toronto. The coastal cities may flood, the Great Lakes may become less great, but your climate may go from famously cold and snowy to, um, somewhat less cold and snowy.
