Snow!

Good news for skiers in southeastern Wisconsin. Lapham Peak's trails are in nice condition following the recent snowfall. The lighted trails make for convenient after-work skiing. They are apparently making progress on the snow-making project there, with a few snow machines operational, but lots more money will be needed to complete the second phase and get a good length of trail covered.

One thing that is becoming clear as I ski and skate with the heart rate monitor is that all these special trips out to special locations to engage in some fancy winter sports activities don't actually constitute very much exercise compared to just cycling to work. Skiing is lots of fun, and is far more appealing than cycling when the ground is covered with icy stuff, but the less-icy-months are when the real exercise occurs, just going through daily life.

So you have real winter over there - here it's finally become cold and frosty, and for Friday they promised snow. Looking forward to it, even though it'll probably last for about an hour and then turn into mud...

Well, skiing was designed as a way to get places easier, much like car driving is. You'd get far better cardio results out of it if you stopped using the darned ski lift though. That's like using an escalator instead of a stepper. :)

Lift? What is this "lift" you speak of? That's part of the fun, first you climb the hills, then speed down the other side. I understand that somewhere out there some wimps actually ride some machine to the top of the hills, but I wouldn't know about that.

The thing is, though, cycling to work and back is around 80 min of exercise just going about life. Skiing is a lengthy drive, then a little skiing, then more driving, and so for all that time, not really that much exercise. The other difference being that I can ride a bicycle for a whole bunch of hours without anything hurting, but too much skiing or skating will abrade some portion of the feet, so it's never a six-hour extravaganza of motion.

*Grin* I stand corrected. ...then slip and slide down the icy slope corrected! ;)

Snow over here, too!
