Capricon!

Another wonderful Capricon! That was the best weekend I’ve had in ages. There was lots of great music. Michal Longcor said that he thought it was about the best music programming you’ll see at a general con and it’s hard to disagree.

To some extent the weekend is a blur to me. I arrived a bit before noon on Friday. I saw [livejournal.com profile] ericcoleman‘s concert, the “music theory, songwriting reality” panel with Longcor, Mary Crowell, and Kat Eggleston. I saw the “absent friends” theme filk and Mary Crowell’s excellent concert. I’ve not seen Dr. Crowell before, or at least I didn’t know that I saw her—possibly she’s been one of the many OVFF attendees who I see without ever figuring out who they are.

I saw part of the ADD Pirate Show, which is much like you might fear it would be, sometimes hilarious, sometimes stupid.

The Peter Beagle and Kat Eggleston concert was fantastic. I’d never heard of either of them. Peter is a great storyteller and performer, and Kat is truly a fantastic musician. I also appreciate them singing in French, both because that’s very beautiful and very cool, and because it means I wasn’t the only person at the con singing in a language other than English. I bought four of Kat’s CDs, and it looked like she sold quite a few.

On Saturday I attended the vocal technique workshop by Wild Mercy’s Jennifer Midkiff (the harper) and the Cheap Guitar Tricks workshop by Barry Childs-Helton. Some of those guitar tricks didn’t seem so cheap to me, but still interesting.

Michael Longcor’s concert was good, as you’d expect. Back when I was first discovering filk in the early ’90s at Chambanacon, which was a pretty big filk event in those days, Moonwulf was a regular. I haven’t been seeing him much in recent years, so it was nice having him as a musical guest. Wild Mercy were fantastic, as always. Tom Smith was hilarious, as always. Tom filled about two hours, which is probably enough to satisfy anyone.

Lots of great stuff music happened in the filk circles. Mary Crowell provided some keyboard accompaniment for various people at various times, and at the Sunday dead dog Jennifer played her harp along with others. Marty sang for us. A few songs from Kat. [livejournal.com profile] filker0 stayed up late and sang quite a bit. I don’t get to hear him often.

I tend to go to conventions with something in mind that I’ve been working on that I want to show off. This time my showoff pieces were the German songs, [livejournal.com profile] aryana_filker‘s Abendlied für Maximilian and the bilingual Wieganlied/Lullaby for Larean. Barry liked Maximilian’s song and asked about a translation, so I read the not very poetic translation that I did mostly myself with a little help from Ayrana. Other than that I’m really not sure what people think about German songs at a filk, but I am confident that I get attention that way. People will remember me, for better or for worse.

I received a lot of very positive comments on my musical performances in the circles. I thought I was having more trouble than usual singing on key, but apparently I didn’t sound so bad. It is particularly nice to be remembered by people who don’t really know me.

I saw lots of friends. [livejournal.com profile] barbarakitten_t, TC, and Marcey; [livejournal.com profile] exapno and, on Sunday, the Xaplings; Art, Deirdre, and Angel from Milwaukee; [livejournal.com profile] born_to_me, [livejournal.com profile] gundo, [livejournal.com profile] _stag, and less-and-less-little [livejournal.com profile] gabrielg; Alyse, Sue, [livejournal.com profile] almeda, [livejournal.com profile] peteralway, [livejournal.com profile] tnatj, and more. It was nice to hear Peter playing his dulcimers. Also, thanks, Peter, for the Wad o’ Music. I got to spend a little time with [livejournal.com profile] filker0, who I had, technically, met before, but hardly knew. It was a great gathering of friends. I don’t think I’ve ever before been so totally surrounded by friendly, huggy, affectionate (and cute!) women. I added a few friends to my mental list of people who I know are happy to be approached for hugs.

Overall, everything seemed to run pretty smoothly. The hotel is nice, with the function spaces not spread out too excessively. Unlike a certain hotel many of us are familiar with. The con suite had a good supply of soda and munchies, but not much in the way of real food. I had one dinner in the hotel restaurant with Kitten and the gang, which was good though not cheap. I spent lots of money on eight CDs and a pointless but cool scrolly blinky thingy.

It was a great con!

I loved the blinky scrolly thing, but only when it said Interesting Things. ;-)

It was -so- good to see you. You're one of the people on my "really want to get to know better/spend more time with" list, you know. I wish I could have spent more time in the music circles, but as a Mommy I have to go to bed way too early. *sigh* Maybe one of these years I'll actually contribute something to one, and not just listen.

*hugs*

I've been trying to think up new messages. Currently I have "Long slow annoying message" and "Phase 1: Collect underpants Phase 2: ??? Phase 3: Profit!"

We do not get to see each other enough. I think I was sick during the last Pythonacon. There is KittenCon, though, right?

[identity profile] born-to-me.livejournal.com 2006-02-14 07:07 am (UTC)(link)
I love the new messages!!

We plan for kittenCon, Duck and Windy - and PythonaCon again this year, of course. I hope to see you at all of them, perhaps?

[identity profile] beige-alert.livejournal.com 2006-02-14 07:48 am (UTC)(link)
Currently the plan is to be at all of those.

It's the party for [livejournal.com profile] gundo's birthday, held Oct 6-8 this year, in Joliet, IL. See http://born-to-me.livejournal.com/442412.html

It was good further meeting you. It seems that I'll be making the Chicago cons a bit more regularly for a little while, at least wilst I'm working in Iowa.

As for staying up late -- when you get to a 4 day con at Midnight on Friday, which is basically mid-way between beginning and end, and are too tired to even get through one of your standards, even at less than half speed, you have to stay up until 6AM Saturday night (or Sunday morning for those who use clocks and calendars to determine the day) to make up for it. Or at least you do if you're me; I'd not presume to tell you what to do.

I enjoyed talking to you, and listening to you. I hope I wasn't too overbearing...

[identity profile] born-to-me.livejournal.com 2006-02-14 07:16 am (UTC)(link)
You were a joy to hear perform, and I hope to get a chance to talk to you much more at future cons. As I said in a reply to [livejournal.com profile] beige_alert, our family will be going to kittenCon (a house-con in honor of [livejournal.com profile] barbarakitten_t's birthday), DuckCon, WindyCon and our own house-con, PythonaCon (in honor of [livejournal.com profile] gundo's birthday). We hope to have a -lot- more music at PythonaCon this year... and would love to have you and any of the localish music types join us.

It was nice to see you, and I hope you do get to more of the Chicago cons. You didn't seem overbearing at all...

[identity profile] aryana-filker.livejournal.com 2006-02-13 11:04 pm (UTC)(link)
:)I wish I had been there!

[identity profile] beige-alert.livejournal.com 2006-02-14 11:42 am (UTC)(link)
Right! Then you could sing songs in English and I could sing in German and we could leave everyone wondering what was going on :) (They are doing this the hard way, they would think...)

[identity profile] aryana-filker.livejournal.com 2006-02-14 11:49 am (UTC)(link)
Hehee, this would be sooo much fun!

[identity profile] almeda.livejournal.com 2006-02-14 09:31 am (UTC)(link)
Some of those guitar tricks didn’t seem so cheap to me

Glad I wasn't the only one thinking that. My take on it was, "If those guitar tricks were cheap, I never want to go to a restaurant Barry thinks is expensive!!" It was Guitar 327 or so, if we take the University view, when I was expecting something in the high 100s at most.

[identity profile] beige-alert.livejournal.com 2006-02-14 11:19 am (UTC)(link)
I think lots of us thought that those tricks were pretty expensive. But I'll probably experiment with some of them, in private, at least.

Oh, and ...

[identity profile] almeda.livejournal.com 2006-02-14 09:49 am (UTC)(link)
Forgot to say it at-con, but you have PRECISELY my same guitar case, which startles and bemuses me. I've never seen another before -- do you have a Yamaha guitar? What model? Mine's a weird shape, so I had to go with the Official case, because none of the standard ones I saw at guitar shops fit it even a little. Luckily yours has a tigertail and mine has all those stickers on it!

Re: Oh, and ...

[identity profile] beige-alert.livejournal.com 2006-02-14 11:27 am (UTC)(link)
I noticed that, too, but didn't think to say anything. Mine is a Yamaha, an LS-400 (not to be confused with the Lexus with the same model name), and that's the Yamaha case. My guitar's body is on the smaller side, which works out well for me because my body is on the smaller side, too.

Mine's a 7/8 scale (FS-340), so smallish ... only her bottom bell is the same width as a regular Yamaha, so she's bigbutted. Like me. :->

Sounds like a great weekend - just why is America so far away?

[identity profile] beige-alert.livejournal.com 2006-02-14 11:45 am (UTC)(link)
Same reason Europe is so far away... Darn ocean....

All the smart people are too busy watching TV to invent the teleportation booth.

*g* Yes. And I still haven't found out how to Apparate...

It's that darned mid-atlantic ridge spreading. Used to be just next door in the good old days.

Yes... seems like yesterday that Pangaea split up, doesn't it? After all, what are 200 million years... ;)
